A late entrant but an important one. I think Funk died through 2008-2012 in modern mainstream hip-hop which didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me at the time. I knew it would return in force and as we see more and more artists like Chance the Rapper etc. express their words harmonically I expect we will see more of the get up and soul clap heading back into shopping center speakers. I loved Thurz’s last album – Concept album’s that strong are rare – but this EP feels entirely different to me. Thurz actively takes a backseat to his production, effectively letting the rhythm component of r.a.p take over. The result for me is a well-balanced product that , although short, holds against the majority of other production this year. Think 1970 meets 1990 and they have a little baby bass guitar and kick drum called Thurz . Something to dance, cook, love and learn with.
